Like everyone else I’ve been playing the game on everyone’s lips this week: Battleborn. Going on everything that has been said about it I wasn’t expecting it to be my cup of tea, and I was kind of right. The actual shooting and combat is pretty great; it feels good and there are loads of upgrades and attack options across the massive roster of characters. The problem I have with Battleborn is that I can’t play it alone very successfully. Borderlands, Gearbox’s most successful IP, was built around co-op play but I managed to solo it without too much difficulty. Battleborn feels like you’re seriously missing a key aspect if you’re playing alone. It’s to be expected, given the MOBA influence, but it sadly means it’s not for me.

Once again I’ve been playing a game I can’t talk about, which I suppose sounds glamourous and all that but is actually kind of annoying. Anyway, as usual you’ll hear more about it next week, but I can say one thing: it’s a game which is nowhere near as bad as some of you may have thought. Oh, cryptic.

Anyway, I also had a little blast on Nu-Doom there. Just the first level, nothing serious, and certainly nothing to base an entire opinion around. But the fact I don’t want to play any more of it is probably cause for concern. I mean, who thought Doom needed MORE cutscenes? And why is the shotgun worse? Why doesn’t it start with a copyright-infringing take on No Remorse by Metallica? WHY DO I HAVE A DOSSIER TELLING ME MY OBJECTIVES? Surely they should always be ‘find keycard, shoot the thing’? Am I wrong?

Anyway, I hear it gets loads better. So check it out. Don’t listen to me. I just love video games too much.

Can I let you in on a secret? It’s a big one so I’m going to have to whisper it…

I’m having more fun with Doom than Uncharted 4.

Now look, I’m only about an hour and a half into each so things could change, but Doom has an immediate wow factor that’s been missing in FPS campaigns for years. It doesn’t pretend to be something that it isn’t. It’s dumb, it’s loud, it’s aggressive, and it’s a hell of a lot of fun. And when it came to trying out Uncharted, I was sat there thinking… I just want to play more Doom.

Uncharted 2, one of the best games ever made, also fell victim of a ropey opening, so I have complete faith in Unch 4 [Unch?! – Ed] pulling it together. But until I get bored of slashing demons in half with chainsaws, I think I’ll be spending most of my time this weekend on Mars.

I’ve now finished Uncharted 4. It’s well good, as evidenced by the fact that I’ve finished it approximately twice in my quest to find all the collectibles (the entertaining and diverting treasure guides, incidentally, are now live on the site) and am still enjoying it. It’s a slow burn start, but it all adds up so that by the time you’re barrelling up a waterfall in a jeep you, like Nate himself, are beginning to ask deeper questions: what effect have the constant near death experiences had on this man? Why does he keep going back to them? What’s driving him in the first place?

Another pertinent one is where is he keeping all the pots and rusted guns that he keeps picking up, because he definitely doesn’t have a rucksack. It’s nice to see him following the tradition of upper class imperialists from the old days, though. The UK has many museums founded because some old toff didn’t have anywhere to keep all the shrunken heads and ivory carvings he’d nicked from indigenous peoples without asking. Maybe that’s been Nate’s plan all along.

Uncharted 4 has clearly had a lot of attention paid to it, in so many ways. There’s a bit where Nate lifts up a bucket full of water and it looks like he’s lifting up a bucket of water! That looks more stupid written down than it sounded in my head, but you’d know what I meant if you saw it.

Also, Sam Drake is definitely the more attractive Drake. I’m just throwing it out there. I would be up for more games with him in.
