During Nvidia’s special event last night, two new powerful graphics cards were unveiled: the GeForce GTX 1080 and the GTX 1070. Both will be among the company’s most powerful cards on the market, and a demonstration last night showcased just how strong an impact the GTX 1080 would be for gaming.
The GTX 1080, which will start at a retail price of $600 ($699 if bought directly from Nvidia), is stronger than Nvidia’s top tier graphics card the Titan X. The Titan X currently costs around $1000, making the GTX 1080 card more cost efficient on top of being more powerful. The GTX 1080 will arrive May 27.
The GTX 1070 will outperform the Titan X by a bit less, and will be available at the lower price of $379 (or $449 directly from Nvidia). It will release June 10.
For comparison, view the graph below from GeForce’s official website, which contrasts the GTX 1080’s performance with that of the GTX 980 for select games and virtual reality.
Specs for the GTX 1080 include:
- GPU Architecture: Pascal
- Frame Buffer: 8 GB GDDR5X
- Memory Type- Speed: 10 gbps
- Boost clock: 1.4x (relative) and 1733 MHz (actual)

Epic Games co-founder Tim Sweeney participated in the presentation last night, showcasing the studio’s upcoming MOBA game Paragon, which ran at 60 frames per second with the new card in use. The GPU ran at 2.1 GHz while the memory was at 5508 MHz.
The GTX 1080 and 1070 both sound like good deals, particularly in comparison to the Titan X. You’d be getting a more powerful card than the Titan X that cuts the price by a significant amount to boot. With virtual reality having just hit the market, a powerful graphics card could become a necessity for having an optimal VR experience.
